DeKalb Flavin Wrestling Tournament: Excitement and Triumphs

DeKalb, Illinois – The DeKalb High School Field House buzzed with excitement on December 27th and 28th as it hosted the highly anticipated DeKalb Flavin Wrestling Tournament. This well-organized event drew an enthusiastic crowd, eager to witness some of the top wrestling talents in action.

In the Wayne Miller bracket, Elmhurst (IC Catholic) emerged victorious by defeating Joliet (Catholic Academy) 33-27 in the 1st place match. Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East) secured 3rd place with a win over Lockport (Twp) 41-29. Luxemburg-Casco took 5th place, Oswego (HS) 6th, Chatham (Glenwood) 7th, and Pewaukee (WI) 8th.

Aurora (Marmion Academy) dominated the Dan Cliffe bracket, clinching 1st place with a decisive 52-29 victory over Yorkville (H.S.). Arlington Heights (Hersey) took 3rd place by defeating Naperville (Central) 38-26. Carol Stream (Glenbard North) finished in 5th place, Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West) in 6th, Sycamore (HS) in 7th, and Libertyville in 8th.

In the Terry McCoy bracket, Detroit Catholic Central HS showcased their strength, defeating Orland Park (Sandburg) 56-11 to claim 1st place. St. Charles (East) secured 3rd place with a 48-26 win over Barrington. Aurora (West Aurora) finished 5th, Deerfield (HS) 6th, Minooka 7th, and Lombard (Glenbard East) 8th.

The Rich Harvey bracket saw Lombard (Montini) edge out Washington 39-32 for the 1st place title. New Lenox (Lincoln-Way West) defeated DeKalb 53-26 to take 3rd place. Rochelle secured 5th place, Mukwonago (WI) 6th, Mt. Prospect (Prospect) 7th, and Moline (H.S.) 8th.

Aurora (West Aurora) emerged victorious in Pool A, followed by Luxemburg-Casco, Carol Stream (Glenbard North), and Rochelle. In Pool B, Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West) led the pack, with Deerfield (HS) in 2nd, Mukwonago (WI) in 3rd, and Oswego (HS) in 4th. Pool C saw Minooka take 1st place, with Chatham (Glenwood), Sycamore (HS), and Mt. Prospect (Prospect) following. Lombard (Glenbard East) topped Pool D, followed by Moline (H.S.), Pewaukee (WI), and Libertyville.

In the Bronze Pool, Lockport (Twp) showcased their resilience, securing 1st place, followed by Naperville (Central), Barrington, and DeKalb. Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East) emerged as the leader in the Silver Pool, with New Lenox (Lincoln-Way West) in 2nd, St. Charles (East) in 3rd, and Arlington Heights (Hersey) in 4th. Washington topped the Gold Pool, followed by Joliet (Catholic Academy), Orland Park (Sandburg), and Yorkville (H.S.).

In the Champion’s Pool, Detroit Catholic Central HS demonstrated their superiority, winning convincingly and securing 1st place. Aurora (Marmion Academy) took 2nd, Lombard (Montini) 3rd, and Elmhurst (IC Catholic) 4th.

The DeKalb Flavin Wrestling Tournament was a resounding success, highlighting the talent and determination of young wrestlers. The well-attended event not only showcased top-notch wrestling but also fostered a sense of community and sportsmanship.

Flavin, known as the “Father of DeKalb Wrestling,” left an indelible mark on the sport over six decades. He is enshrined in four Halls of Fame: IWCO (1977), NIU (1990), DeKalb High School Wall of Fame (1994), and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum (2001). Flavin received numerous accolades, including the National Wrestling Coaches Association 25-Year Service Award, a Presidential Citation from Ronald Reagan, and the NWHOFM “Lifetime Service to Wrestling” award. His legacy includes a remarkable coaching record and contributions as the director of the U.S. Olympic Freestyle and Greco-Roman Training Camp at NIU.
