Bulldogs Demolish Hawks 56-0 in Dominant Class 7A Playoff Opener

The Batavia Bulldogs (8-2) made a commanding statement in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A Playoffs Friday night, dismantling the Hoffman Estates Hawks (6-4) with a decisive 56-0 victory at Batavia High School. The Bulldogs’ defense registered the shutout, while the offense delivered eight touchdowns across three quarters.

Batavia’s offense struck first in the opening quarter on a touchdown run by senior running back Preston Brummel (#36) to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs’ defense immediately created momentum, forcing a turnover with 5:25 left in the quarter when senior Tony Minnec (#6) recovered a fumble dropped by Hoffman Estates senior Austin Lezniak (#12).

The lead ballooned in the second quarter. Junior wide receiver Darin Ashiru (#0) scored the first of four second-quarter touchdowns, with Caleb Peters’ (#17) successful extra point pushing the lead to 14-0. Senior defensive end Nick Jansey (#9) soon added another touchdown, extending the lead to 21-0.

With 7:58 remaining in the half, senior Henry Hahn (#28) delivered the fourth touchdown. After a successful Peters kick, the score stood at 28-0. Brummel later scored his second touchdown of the night with 4:46 remaining, and a successful extra point made the halftime score 35-0. Both teams were called for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the closing minutes of the half.

The 35-point margin triggered the running clock rule for the start of the third quarter. The continuous clock did little to slow Batavia’s scoring pace.

Preston Brummel (#36) opened the half with his third touchdown at 9:08, followed by a successful extra point from Peters, pushing the score to 42-0.

The most exciting play of the quarter came from junior defensive back Jack Brown (#5). Brown scooped up a fumbled ball and returned it from the 50-yard line for a touchdown. Peters’ successful kick made the score 49-0 as the third quarter concluded.

Batavia secured the final points of the night in the fourth quarter when Elijah Gonzalez (#31) scored a touchdown. With 5:25 remaining, the successful eighth extra point kick by Peters finalized the score at 56-0.

The victory moves the Batavia Bulldogs forward to the IHSA Class 7A Second Round.
