Top Wrestlers Shine at Illinois Freestyle State Championships in DeKalb

DEKALB, ILLINOIS — The Illinois Freestyle State Championships brought together the state’s top high school wrestling talent for a two-day event at DeKalb High School on May 3–4. Saturday’s matches featured intense competition, with athletes from clubs like The Wrestling Academy, Izzy Style Wrestling, and Relentless Training Center delivering standout performances.

Notable matches included:

  • Symon Woods (Illinois) securing a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Anthony Hayes (Cory Clark Wrestling) in the 100-pound final.

  • Zachary Stewart (SPAR Wrestling Academy) edging out Maksim Mukhamedaliyev (Izzy Style Wrestling) in a thrilling 23-22 decision at 144 pounds.

  • Evan Gosz (Alber Athletics Wrestling Club) achieving a swift 54-second fall against Evan Matkovich (SPAR Wrestling Academy) in the 150-pound championship.

  • Ilia Dvoryannikov (Toss Em Up Wrestling Academy) cruised to a 10-0 tech fall in the 175-pound final over Bowden Delaney (Patton Trained WC), demonstrating clear control in the upper weights.

G Media Group’s Zachary Gebis was at DeKalb High School and captured the action on Saturday, highlighting the intensity and skill displayed by these young athletes. This annual championship continues to showcase the depth of wrestling talent in Illinois, providing a platform for athletes to compete at a high level and gain valuable experience.
