NIU Wrestling’s Black Team Edges Out 16-14 Victory in Thrilling Red-Black Dual

The Northern Illinois University (NIU) Huskies wrestling team showcased their talents in the annual Red-Black Dual on October 25 at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, IL. The Black team clinched a narrow 16-14 victory.

Starting the action, Charles Curtis took a 5-4 decision at 141 pounds for the Black team. Collin Arch followed up at 149 pounds with a major decision win over Tee Ward. The 157-pound bout featured the evening’s first sudden victory, with Landen Johnson edging out Brody Hallin in a 4-3 battle. Tommy Bennett kept the momentum going, securing a 7-6 decision at 165 pounds.

The competition remained intense as Jake Evans achieved a tight 4-2 win in the 174-pound division. Dominick Heim contributed with a 4-2 decision at 184 pounds, while Sean Carroll claimed an 11-5 victory at 197 pounds.

In the final matches of the night, Blake West posted a strong 13-4 major decision in the 125-pound division, while Markel Baker dominated the 133-pound dual, winning 18-8 by major decision.

With this dual complete, the Huskies now look ahead to their 2024-25 season opener at the Michigan State Open on November 9, followed by their home debut against Rider University on November 22. The Red-Black Dual demonstrated the team’s skill, commitment, and preparation for a promising season.
