High School Football Rivalry: Geneva Defeats Batavia in 56-49 Thriller

BATAVIA, IL – Fans filled the stands on Friday night as two elite rivals delivered a offensive showdown. High school football fans witnessed a instant classic when the Geneva Vikings defeated the Batavia Bulldogs 56-49 on September 25, 2026.

Batavia struck first at the 7:09 mark of the opening quarter. Michael Vander Luitgaren crossed the goal line for a touchdown, and kicker Christian Balok added the point after to take a 7-0 lead. Geneva responded quickly. Nelson Wedel scored his first touchdown of the evening to tie the score. Wedel struck again with 55.9 seconds left in the quarter, giving Geneva a 14-7 advantage. Hudson Van Kleeck converted all extra-point attempts for the Vikings.

Batavia surged back after the break. Darin Ashiru broke through the defense for a touchdown with 8:21 left in the third quarter, tying the game at 28-28. Geneva quickly regained control. Luke Ignoffo scored to reclaim the lead, and Wedel added another rushing touchdown with 1:39 left in the frame. Despite an illegal procedure penalty on the restart, Van Kleeck nailed the re-taken extra point to give Geneva a 42-28 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter featured relentless action from both teams. Vander Luitgaren scored for Batavia at 11:30 to cut the deficit. Geneva called a timeout to regroup and responded with a Peterson touchdown at 5:15. Batavia then mounted a furious comeback. Ashiru crossed the goal line with 3:37 remaining to pull Batavia within seven. Just 15 seconds later, Vander Luitgaren secured his third touchdown of the night, tying the game at 49-49 with 3:22 on the clock.

Geneva delivered the final decisive strike. Wedel rushed into the end zone with 1:04 remaining to seal the 56-49 victory for the Vikings.
