Zachary Gebis | January 12, 2025

DeKalb, IL– The Northern Illinois University (NIU) wrestling team faced a tough challenge against Purdue University on Sunday, January 12, in a dual meet that tested the Huskies’ resilience. Despite some standout performances, NIU fell short, losing 28-10 to the Boilermakers, who fielded a formidable lineup featuring several nationally ranked wrestlers.

Key Highlights:

  • 125 lbs: In a nail-biting match, No. 1 Matt Ramos (Purdue) edged out NIU’s No. 21 Blake West with a 5-4 decision. West pushed the top-ranked Ramos to the limit, showcasing his grit and skill.
  • 141 lbs: Jacob Brya (NIU) delivered a strong performance, defeating Purdue’s Cole Solomey by a 6-1 decision. Brya’s win marked a highlight for the Huskies, as he controlled the match from start to finish.
  • 157 lbs: Landen Johnson (NIU) electrified the crowd with a dominant technical fall victory over Kade Law (Purdue), 18-1, at 6:49. Johnson’s relentless attack earned him the Huskies’ most impressive win of the night.

Despite these strong individual efforts, Purdue’s depth and skill proved too much for NIU. The Boilermakers secured major decisions at 149 lbs, 174 lbs, and 197 lbs, along with technical fall wins at 157 lbs and 184 lbs, demonstrating their prowess in several weight classes.

NIU fans are encouraged to support the team at their next and final home meet against the University of Buffalo on February 7th at 7 PM during the Beauty and the Beast event. Guest should arrive early for a special senior sendoff ceremony.
