Roselle, IL – Under blue skies and with a charged atmosphere at Lake Park High School, 17 teams from across the region came together Friday for the IHSA Class 3A Boys Track and Field Sectional. Batavia emerged as the dominant force, tallying 118 points to capture the team title and punch their ticket to the IHSA State Finals in Charleston.
York followed in second place with 80.5 points, while St. Charles North rounded out the top three with 59 points.
The stakes were high at this sectional, with top finishers advancing to the IHSA State Championships at O’Brien Stadium, hosted by Eastern Illinois University next weekend. Fans witnessed an impressive display of speed, strength, and precision across both track and field events.
One of the most electrifying performances of the evening came during the 110m Hurdles. In Heat 4, Glenbard West junior Ben Schoettle edged out the field with a blistering time of 14.61, comfortably under the state qualifying standard of 15.26. He was closely followed by Amari Williams of Wheaton Warrenville South (14.62) and Luke De Simone of York (14.85), both of whom also qualified for Charleston.
In the 100m dash, Batavia senior Nathan Whitwell clocked in at 10.74, well ahead of the 10.94 qualifying standard, securing his spot at State. Glenbard West junior Jordan Ademuyiwa also punched his ticket with a 10.92 finish.
The 4x100m relay was another tightly contested race, with six teams advancing to the state finals. The top squads brought the crowd to its feet with slick baton passes and blazing anchor legs.
The 800m showcased a thrilling finish by Batavia’s Edward Polaski, whose well-timed 50-meter burst down the final stretch secured him a first-place finish in 1:56.45. His surge drew one of the loudest reactions of the night, with spectators rising to their feet as he pulled ahead in the last seconds.
Willowbrook junior Otis Powell claimed the high jump title, while Nicholas Roskilly, a junior from West Chicago, secured second — a huge accomplishment for the Wildcats program.
Batavia continued its dominance in the field with senior Isaiah Brown leaping to first in the triple jump, followed closely by Willowbrook senior Jaden Royal.
Lake Park fans had reason to celebrate as junior Joseph Michelini claimed victory in the shot put, with Gavin Pecor of Batavia earning second.
In pole vault, Nathan McLoughlin of St. Charles North cleared an impressive 16-0 to take the title.
West Aurora’s Dionte Shaw delivered a standout throw of 191-7 in the discus, the top mark of the night and a clear state-qualifying performance.
With the sectional now behind them, top athletes from across these schools will make the journey downstate to Charleston for the IHSA State Championships. For many, Friday’s performances were not just personal bests but stepping stones toward medals at the highest level of Illinois high school track and field.
